789 Plum Tree Road, Barrington Hills, Illinois
Guided tours begin at 2:00 p.m.
Concert begins promptly at 3:30 p.m.
Before there were jukeboxes and radios there were nickelodeons and orchestrions, ingenious mechanical music machines that played the music of the day from the late 1800s through the 1920s.
The Sanfilippo family of Barrington Hills has amassed the largest variety of these restored instruments in the world. The collection is beautifully displayed in the "Place de la Musique" within the family's mansion, where the functioning music machines are surrounded by an equally impressive array of Victorian-era architectural elements and antiques. The centerpiece of the Sanfilippo music collection is the largest theater organ ever built; this magnificent 8,000 pipe instrument is nearly a third larger than the organ at Radio City Music Hall.
You won't want to miss this opportunity to experience a docent-led tour of the Sanfilippo Collection, followed by a concert on the magnificent theater organ. The concert will feature music from Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera, and other selections chosen by the organist to showcase this spectacular instrument.
The Sanfilippo Estate was recently profiled on WGN TV.
